Homework to be Prepared for the Upcoming November 13th OUT LOUD Meeting:

Speech #4 (Humor)

    BPS:  The students will be ready to tell a joke or a funny story with the intention to entertain their audience.  

  • This is to delight
  • Must be appropriate for all audiences
  • 2 minutes maximum
Things to remember:
  • Practice saying the punchline  without laughing
  • Memorize your joke/story completely
  • Do not use riddle or “knock-knock” jokes
Criteria for Evaluation:
  • Stay in time limit
  • 3 second rule
  • Articulation
  • Eye Contact



BPS+:  The students will be ready to tell a joke or a funny story with the intention to entertain their audience.

BPS and BPS+  Homework to be Prepared for the October 23, 2012 OUT LOUD MEETING:

Informative or Demonstration Speech
**Informative:  A presentation that informs an audience about a specific topic of the speaker's choice that uses the aid of props or visual aids.
**Demonstration:  A presentation that demonstrates the process of making or doing something with the use of props.


  • 1-2 minutes for BPS, 3-3.5 for BPS+
  • Must use props/visual aid(s)
  • Points to possibly include in an informative:
    • What is the item?
    • Who gave you the item?
    • Why is it important to you?
    • What do you do with this item?
  • Skills to focus on:
    • Poise (no fidgeting with your item)
    • Eye Contact (looking at your audience and not your item)
    • Projection (speaking so your audience can hear you)

Speech #6: Current Event

    BPS:  In a well organized presentation, try to answer as many of the following questions about something that is currently happening in your home, neighborhood, school, church, etc.
  • Why is this important to me and my family, neighborhood, school, church, etc?
  • Who is affected by it?
  • Why do I want the audience to care?
Criteria for evaluation:
  • Stay within time limit (2-3 minutes)
  • Use of interesting detail
  • Organization
  • 3 second rule
  • Eye Contact
Things to remember:
  • The topic should matter to the speaker
  • If there is a problem, the speaker should offer a solution
  • If there is no problem, the speaker should tell why it is important to them

BPS+: In a well organized presentation, try to answer as many of the following questions about a current event happening in the news.

  • Why is this an important issue in the news today?
  • Who does it affect?
  • What makes this issue newsworthy?
  • Does the media report this issue from a bias?  
  • What is your solution to the problem?
  • How or why is your solution better than the media’s?
Criteria for evaluation:
  • Stay within the time limit (3-4 minutes)

  • Selection of a newsworthy issue
  • Interesting details
  • Substance: Real information and facts about the issue
  • Organization of information (see outline below)
  • 3 second rule
  • Poise
  • Eye contact
Things to remember:
  • The issue should be newsworthy and important to the speaker
  • The speaker needs to present a solution
